What is Claw? |
A classic left-to-right side-scroller with gameplay similar to Super Mario Bros or Jill of the Jungle. Originally released in September 1997, Claw is extremely fun and addictive and a really good example of the genre. For more information check out the Captain Claw homepage. |
Where can I get it? |
Ignore all the ordering information on the Captain Claw site, Monolith doesn't sell the game anymore. Fans have made a free version available, you can download it here. It doesn't have any of the cutscenes that come with the CD version, but other than that it's completely playable. |
Isn't that piracy? |
"Abandonware" is a more accurate term. Monolith no longer produces or supports the game, so making the game available for free is the only way to keep it alive. Monolith wouldn't be making any money from it anyway, so who gets hurt? Once Monolith pulls its head out of its collective arsehole and starts re-selling their old games I'll take the link down. |
I have the No-CD version from Home of the Underdogs. Is there any way I can get the cutscenes? |
Claw has over 20 minutes of professionally animated cutscenes, done by Wallace Studios. If you badly want them (they do improve the atmosphere of the game and reveal a lot about the background story) instructions on how to obtain a complete version can be found here. |
The game is too hard! Are there any easier difficulty levels or anything? |
Claw has no difficulty levels, but if you download the v1.2 patch from the Captain Claw Homepage the game will be significantly easier. |
Are there any cheat codes? |
If you don't mind your game not saving, yes. |
[Any question relating to defeating specific enemies and bosses, completing levels, finding secret areas, etc.] |
Download and read the walkthroughs from this site. For help on bosses, go here. If you still need help with something, post on the forums. |
Is it possible to get a perfect score in Claw? |
Unfortunately, Monolith's level designers must have stuffed up somewhere along the road as there are some levels where the answer is no. Level 2 has a coin that the player cannot reach. Level 9 has a crate containing a gold bar that has invalid co-ordinates. Level 14 has a Tiger Guard that contains a gold bar, a cross and a ring and has invalid co-ordinates. On all the other levels a 100% score is attainable. |
How do I upload my high scores to the Claw website? |
Start the game, load the appropriate profile, click Single Player, and then click "Upload Scores." For reasons unknown, this will sometimes cause the game to crash. |
How come the scores on the official High Score Board are so ridiculously high? (i.e. 99,999,999,900) |
A trainer was made for the game some years ago that allows you to cheat with the game still saving normally. A large number of cheat scores have been uploaded, and Monolith doesn't care enough to remove them. I think that the highest score achievable without cheating is somewhere in the twenty million range. |
Is there a Mac version of the game? |
No. |
How do I play Claw on multiplayer? |
First, you need the 1.3 patch, which enables TCP/IP support. Then you should be able to connect to someone's game using their IP address. There are no hosted servers that can be used to play Claw, so you need to arrange games through email or MSN. |
How do I apply a patch to the No-CD version of the game? When I extract the new .exe file it keeps on giving me a "please insert CD" message when I try to run it. |
From the downloads section get the Claw crack, and extract the entire contents of the zip file into your main Claw directory. Then, rename either the Claw_v12 or Claw_v13 (depending on which patch you want) to just plain "Claw." Run it once, download the appropriate patch, and you should be all set. |
How do I play a custom level? |
Create a \custom folder in your main Claw directory (C:\games\Claw\custom or something like that) and put custom levels there. Custom levels for Claw are .wwd files. You can then play them by running the game and selecting Single Player --> Custom Levels. |
How do I *CREATE* a custom level? |
The Claw editor is called Wapworld, and can be downloaded from the Download section. Create an \editor folder in your main Claw directory, extract everything in the zip file there, and you can begin editing by running Wapworld.exe. I might warn you, creating a custom level for Claw is not for the faint of heart. Wapworld is a very advanced program, though fortunately it has good documentation. Read the entire help file, and begin creating simple levels of your own. If you get stuck, refer to the help file. Or if you really don't understand something, email me or DzjeeAr and we'll do our best to help you. Oh yeah, and if you complete a custom level, email it to me. I admire anyone who takes the time to learn to use Wapworld and create levels with it, and I always play them; no matter how crappy they are. |
Is there a Claw 2? |
No, and I'm 99% sure there never will be. |
